We are the Champions of the World! Or at least the world of Theatre on Ice!  Congratulations to our outstanding Theatre on Ice Teams! The weekend of June 27-28, over 100 Space Coast IcePlex Figure Skating Club members and assorted parents, friends and grandparents made the trip to Burlington Vt for the 1st annual National Theatre on Ice competition and the 13th annual International Theatre on Ice competition. The National competition was held on Friday June 27. Our Novice team was awarded a silver medal for their performance of "Barnum". The Junior Team placed 3rd for "Mary Poppins". Our Adult Team tied for 4th with their rendition of the "Blues Brothers." The next day, the International competition was held. The Junior team competed in the choreographic exercise portion of the competition with "Tarzan, Boy to Man" and received the Gold Medal for their performance. Then came each of the free skate programs. The Novice team's "Barnum", skated against 11 other teams, was awarded a first place Gold Medal! The Junior team took the ice as the defending gold medalists from last year and did not disappoint the judges who once again awarded them first place gold for "Mary Poppins".  The adults who have only been practicing since spring came in 5th but had a great time!  The Space Coast Hurricanes Theatre on Ice Teams are definitely making a name for themselves as well as Brevard County throughout the figure skating community.

The Space Coast Iceplex and Katie Nyman are proud to be among the first rinks in the country to host the Theatre on Ice program.

Although popular in Europe for some about 20 years, the discipline is fairly new to the United States.

The Iceplex has four teams, Intro, Juvenile, Senior and Adult currently in operation and three of the four are travelling competitive teams.

Theatre on Ice (TOI) is a concept using all aspects of figure skating, incorporating a theme, emotion or story, enhanced by music. It is a performance that includes five dimensions:

                           Choreography

                           Skating movements

                           Props or scenery

                           Sound and Music

                           A central theme

CLASS STRUCTURE

Weekly group class sessions cover off ice warm up techniques, basic skating skills, musical timing, interpretation, arm development and specialized skating movements. For even the beginner, all these components are essential in building a strong all round skater.

Additionally, time is spent during each session developing Theatre On Ice style routines which are performed in full costume at the regular Iceplex recitals.

To participate in this program, the skater will need to be committed to participate in our four recitals and the annual Holiday Show. The skaters will also be required to meet the costuming costs (which are kept to a minimum) for each event.

As a guideline, recitals are scheduled during the following month:

February - "Valentine's"

May - "Parent's Appreciation"

August  - "Back to School"

October  - "Halloween"

December - "Holiday Show"

The demand for our TOI  program is so great that we now run 4 different levels of classes, "INTRO......"JUVENILE"..... "SENIOR"......"ADULT"

The "INTRO" level class is for the beginner TOI'ers and we ask that all skaters must have passed USFS Basic Skills level 6.

The "JUVENILE" level class, the skaters must have passed the United States Figure Skating Pre -Preliminary moves test

The "SENIOR"  level class is by arrangement with coach Katie

The "ADULT" class is our newest addition to the Theatre program. If you have the first USFS test and are 18...well take you!

The times for all these classes are listed below .

Our senior team "THE SPACE COAST HURRICANES" is where we started out 3 years ago, bringing together all the higher level figure skaters and working them as a team on Saturday mornings at 6am. We have since skated in the International Theatre On Ice Event for 3 consecutive years and this is the event our member skaters look forward to each year.

In 2007, we came home as INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONS with our interpretation of "Alice in Wonderland". Please see link to press release at the top of  the page under the Theatre masks.

For 2008, the adult team will be competing for the very first time. Here is  their debut performance in the Iceplex Valentine recital in February 2008, where they performed to the Blues Brothers.
