The whole process was gradual, but that is not to say that there was a succession of structures intermediate in form between gills and lungs. Evolution through takeovers requires no structural similarity between the first way of performing functions and later ways. Continuity between organisms in an evolving line does not imply a long term continuity of the subsystems that make them Up'. We might compare a line of organisms with a rope which may be continuous for a hundred metres although its individual fibres are only a few metres long (Figure Ib).
This mass creates a richly heterogeneous set of microenvironments; some protected from the UV light, others tending to bind certain types of organic molecules, still others containing catalytic sites. Ions of transition metals, like iron, might have been particularly important, both free and incorporated into clay layers. Such ions would be UV-shields but they would also themselves have photochemical effects. Radiation in the 200- 300 nm range can readily generate oxidising and reducing agents-Fe 3 + from Fe 2 +, for example, and radicals such as H (see Cairns-Smith, 1978).
The experimenter validates the theory. Actually, the idealized time of either philosophical or physical theory is at the far end of a loop that begins with observations and acts, and returns to observations and acts. The vision at the far end of the loop shifts and changes, but the reality of how it was sought for and what it comes back to do not. In this sense lived time has priority, systematic priority. Every observation that leads us to temporality observed is filtered first through the lived time of an observer; and only then can it be laid down in an orderly way in the conserving intellect.
