Two of the Space Coast Hurricanes teams are competing in Logrono, Spain for Nations Cup in April 2013
Press Release:-
The US Figure Skating Association is sending a total of 12 teams (4 Senior, 4 Junior, 2 Novice and 2 Adult level) to represent the United States at the 3rd Nations Cup Theatre on Ice Competition being held this year at the the Pista de Hielo Lobet, (ice rink) Logroño, La Rioja, Spain. In addition to our US teams there will be teams from France, Spain, Russia, Australia and Kazakhstan skating at this very prestigious event. Two of the teams are our very own from The Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge, Florida. Both teams currently hold the title of National Champion in their division. This honor was bestowed to them last year by winning gold medals at the US National TOI Competition held in Cleveland Ohio qualifying them to go on to the Nations Cup.
The Space Coast Hurricanes Novice Theatre on Ice Team consists of 27 skaters ages 7 – 18. They will be performing their freestyle interpretation of Peter Pan. The Space Coast Frozen Hurricanes Adult Theatre on Ice Team consists of 21 adult skaters, they will be performing their freestyle interpretation of Henry the VIII. In addition to their freestyle numbers, both teams will perform a CE (Choreographic Exercise) Routine where all skaters wear full black unitards, very little make up or other adornment and they are scored and judged on technical elements set by the International CE Committee, (which this year consists of officials from Australia and the United States). All competing teams must perform emphasizing the same criteria which for 2013 are:
o Style - Cultural Dance
o Choreographic Process – Repetition
o Body Movement – Level Change
Our skaters are lead by 5 of our coaches including Katie Nyman, the Director of the Theatre on Ice Program at the Space Coast Iceplex. An additional 52 parents, family and friends are also accompanying our skaters to Spain for a total of 108 travelers in our group. Most skaters are leaving for Spain from Florida on Wednesday evening, April 24th with a connection thru either Madrid or Barcelona then on to Pamplona sometime Thursday where they will then take a bus to Logroño approximately a 1 hour drive from Pamplona. No easy feat to get there but we are very excited. Competition Dates are long – both Saturday and Sunday, April 26 & 27, with practice ice Friday 04/25. Awards ceremony begins at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27th. Our teams are self funded and have been working very hard in our fundraising efforts to cover our competition costs. We welcome any opportunity to participate in local fundraisers or community events that can showcase and help us support our program.
“We usually surprise people at competitions when we perform because since we are from Florida people think we can’t skate. We work really hard to show them otherwise and we love the theatrical story telling side of TOI. My teammates are all my friends and we all share a love for skating and performing.” Shannon Panzini, 16 yrs old Rockledge, FL
All 4 of our Theatre on Ice teams perform at shows at the Iceplex throughout the year. June will be the next recital at the Iceplex showcasing our teams and many other very talented and successful skaters in our community. We welcome everyone to come check it out.
NOVICE TEAM 27 skaters "Peter Pan"

ADULT TEAM - 21 skaters "The Tudors"

GOOD LUCK HURRICANES!!!
The Space Coast Iceplex and Katie Nyman are proud to be among the first rinks in the country to host the Theatre on Ice program.
Although popular in Europe for some about 20 years, the discipline is fairly new to the United States.
The Iceplex has four teams, Intro, Novice, Junior and Adult currently in operation and three of the four are travelling competitive teams.
Theatre on Ice (TOI) is a concept using all aspects of figure skating, incorporating a theme, emotion or story, enhanced by music. It is a performance that includes five dimensions:
- Choreography
- Skating movements
- Props or scenery
- Sound and Music
- A central theme
The story of "Theatre on Ice" at the Iceplex
Our junior team "THE SPACE COAST HURRICANES" is where we started out 7 years ago, bringing together all the higher level figure skaters and working them as a team on Saturday mornings at 6am. We have since competed in the International Theatre On Ice Event for 7 consecutive years and Nationals for 4 years. These events are what our team skaters look forward to every year.
In 2007, we came home with our first GOLD MEDAL as INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONS with our interpretation of "Alice in Wonderland" and since then, the various Hurrianes theatre teams have been regular championship winners both Nationally and Internationally. Our skaters have qualified for the world Theatre on Ice event 2 times and winner in these prestigious events. In April 2013 the Adult and Novice team will be travelling to Logrono, Spain for the 3rd Nations Cup.
For 2008, the Space Coast 'FROZEN" Hurricanes adult team formed and in 2012 won the National title, so an exciting time for our adult team. There are new adults joining us all the time, a lot of them are Moms of the younger team members. If you are interested in becoming a "Frozen Hurricane" please contact Coach Katie.
CLASS STRUCTURE
Weekly group class sessions cover off ice warm up techniques, basic skating skills, musical timing, interpretation, arm development and specialized skating movements. For even the beginner, all these components are essential in building a strong all round skater.
Additionally, time is spent during each session developing Theatre On Ice style routines which are performed in full costume at the regular Iceplex recitals. To participate in this program, the skater will need to be committed to participate in our four recitals and the annual Holiday Show. The skaters will also be required to meet the costuming costs (which are kept to a minimum) for each event.
RECITALS
As a guideline, recitals are scheduled during the following month:
- February - "Valentine's"
- May - "Mothers Day"
- August - "Back to School"
