Sled Hockey

The Space Coast Blast Adult Sled Hockey Team travelled to Raleigh, North Carolina for the weekend of March 10th – 12th for the season-ending tournament to decide the champion of the Southeast Sled Hockey League (SESHL).  The SESHL began back in September in Atlanta, travelled to Ellenton in January, then finished up in Raleigh.  Going into the weekend in Raleigh, the team’s only goal was to win the league finals on Sunday with the games Friday and Saturday acting as warm ups to reach the finals!  Friday night the Blast opened up against a familiar opponent from the other coast, the Tampa Bay Lightning!  An even start to the game quickly changed to a  3 – 0 loss.  However, the result gave the Blast plenty to learn from and use as the weekend progressed.   Saturday morning saw an early 7:00 am game against the 1st place Carolina Hurricanes.  This contest saw plenty of physical hockey on both ends of the ice.  Scoreless through the first two periods, both teams were laying it all out on the ice as if the championship depended on it.  Unfortunately, Carolina slipped their first goal in on a loose puck in front of the net at the 4:29 mark in the third period.  They followed up with a second about a minute later.  Despite the 2-0 loss, the Blast knew they had the Hurricanes where they wanted them for Sunday’s Final.  The last tuneup before the semifinals and finals saw the Blast getting their scoring touch back against Nashville.  0 – 0 through two periods, Karina Villegas opened up the scoring with a beautiful finish with assists from Harry Benson and Jasmine Stewart.   To round out the scoring, Harry Benson (lifetime goalie) netted his first career goal to seal the victory with an assist from Amanda Martori.

Sunday’s semifinal matched the Blast up with the 2nd place Lightning.  Having learned from Friday’s loss, the Blast set out finish their goal of winning the league tournament.  Tampa opened the scoring when Billy Hannigan slipped a long, fast shot past Harry Benson to take a 1-0 lead.  Unlike Friday, the Blast took over the game, pressuring every puck and putting shots on the Lightning goal.  Four minutes after going down, Nate Winters fired a wrister from the circle that found its way into the net to tie the game up 1 – 1 with six minutes left in the first.  The second period saw the action mostly in Tampa’s end as the Blast dictated the tempo and play (6 shots to 1 in favor of the Blast).  As the third progressed, the teams battled for every loose puck knowing a trip to the finals and a league title was at stake.  With 1:02 left in the 3rd period, Karina Villegas took a pass from Nate Winters to net the game winning goal.  Beau Corbett added an assist with some solid effort out of the corner to keep the puck alive.

The Finals… A rematch against Carolina.  The Blast were one victory away from the goal they set when the team was selected:  Win the League Title!  The undefeated Carolina Hurricanes were the only team left in their way!  The finals picked up right where Saturday’s game left off, with physical hockey from the drop of the puck. Just 25 seconds into the game, Beau Corbett set the tone but was called for T-boning (Checking with the nose of his sled).  While in the box, a fired-up Blast penalty team took advantage and scored a shorthanded goal that ended up being the only tally of the game for either team.  Amanda Martori took a pass from Nate Winters and fired a rocket along the ice to beat the Carolina netminder who seemed to be looking for a high shot.  The rest of the first saw the Blast shorthanded for penalties called on their physical play.  Following the goal, the blast killed off a long 5-on-3 penalty kill!  The defensive trio of JP Picaro (playing with cracked ribs and a torn up shoulder from Saturday’s Carolina game), Nate Winters, and Jasmine Stewart kept everything they could away from their net.  Meanwhile, Harry Benson stood on his head at times to stop the shots that did make it through to preserve his championship shutout.   A total team effort, with every member leaving nothing in the tank, secured the inaugural SESHL League Title for the Space Coast Blast.
