Future Stars Feature
Every month we will be featuring one of our “Future Stars” skaters. SCI would like to introduce Audrey Wiant! Audrey took her first skating lesson at around around two and a half. However, it wasn’t until she watched SCI’s rendition of Mary Poppins On Ice that she wanted to start taking consistent lessons. Audrey just turned five and has been taking lessons on a regular basis for almost two years. She absolutely loves skating and her lessons. She is always eager to help new skaters and give her daddy some pointers. Audrey says that one day she may be a coach and teach the little kids how to skate. While she is in Skate Academy at the Basic 6 level, her favorite skating moves are waltz jump/toe loop combos. The most challenging element she is learning now is a Salchow. One of Audrey’s idols is a higher level skater at our rink named Saskia. Saskia recently landed her triple loop and Audrey loves watching her skate in shows and on the freestyle sessions.
Next month’s featured skater will be Tiana Young!
Guest Coach Geoff Dinisio
SCI is pleased to announce that Geoff Dinisio will be coaching Thursday April 5th – April 7th.
Geoff is a world-renowned portable harness specialist who works at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. Geoff has had an instrumental role in the development of many skaters in the last 17 years. Geoff has worked with many of the world’s top skaters; most notably 2014 Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, American champion Adam Rippon, and has recently worked with rising stars Jun Hwan Cha and Stephen Gogolev. Geoff also worked with 2010 Olympic champion Yuna Kim. Lessons can be scheduled through Brielle Francis at Brielle@spacecoasticeplex.com. They will be scheduled on a first come first serve basis.

Space Coast Blast Defend SESHL Title
The Space Coast Blast adult sled hockey team won it’s second consecutive Southeast Sled Hockey League title this past Sunday in Raleigh, NC at the Raleigh Iceplex. The team finished league regular season play with an 8-4 record, and played Tampa in the semi-finals.
The Blast had a 2-1 record against Tampa coming into the game, and came out knowing their cross-state rivals would provide a tough test. The Blast took a 1-0 lead midway through the first, and doubled up on that lead in the second period. The defense played well, and goalie Daniel Miner made some key stops from point blank range late in the third period to protect the shutout. The final score was 2-0.
The team then faced SESHL regular season champions Carolina in the final. The Blast came into the final as underdogs, given that they had lost all three regular season games to Carolina, and scored only one goal in those games. In addition, Carolina had given up only two goals in 12 regular season games.
The Blast took a 1-0 lead on a nice goal by Brett Bolton that found it’s way through a screen into the net. Carolina brought a surge that gave them a 2-1 lead mid-way through the second. After a timeout, the team regrouped, and tied the game late in the second.
The play went back an forth through the third period, and the Blast went up 3-2 mid-way through the final period. Carolina had a number of chances after that, but Miner made some key saves and the defense held to secure the 3-2 win. This was the team’s second consecutive title, having won the league’s inaugural title in 2017.
Players on the team this weekend were Brett Bolton, Anthony Martinez, Tripp Skinner, Sean Gallagher, Karina Villegas, Amanda Martori, Daniel Miner, Nate Winters, and Harry Benson. Beau Corbett (injury) and Stephen Peterson were unable to play this weekend, but all contributed to the team’s regular season success.
The team also won the Carolina Cup, which was awarded to the team with the best performance in the weekend’s games prior to the SESHL playoffs.
The team went 3-0 in the preliminary games, and was tied with Tampa and Carolina. Space Coast and Carolina won the first tiebreaker with Tampa, giving up fewer goals. Space Coast won the next tiebreaker with Carolina, obtaining fewer penalty minutes in the three games.
